China targets US defense firms over Taiwan weapons deal

(MENAFN) China on Friday announced sanctions against US defense companies and senior executives following the Trump administration’s approval of a record-setting arms sale to Taiwan.

In an official statement, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said the measures were taken “in accordance with the anti-foreign sanctions law” and target 20 US defense-related firms and 10 executives involved in supplying arms to Taiwan in recent years.

Earlier this month, the US approved eight arms packages for Taiwan valued at over $11 billion, including a $4 billion sale of 60 M107A7 self-propelled howitzers, 82 M142 HIMARS multiple rocket launchers, 420 ATACMS tactical missiles, $1 billion in ALTIUS tube-launched loitering drones, and $353 million in TOW missiles.

China condemned the move, reiterating that “the Taiwan question is at the very core of China’s core interests and the first red line that must not be crossed in China-US relations.” The statement warned that any provocations regarding Taiwan would be met with a firm response and emphasized Beijing’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The sanctions include freezing “movable and immovable properties, and other kinds of assets” of the targeted firms and individuals within China, and prohibiting all organizations and citizens in China from engaging in business or cooperation with them.

China urged the US to adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiqués, halt arms sales to Taiwan, avoid undermining peace in the Taiwan Strait, and stop encouraging pro-independence forces. Beijing reaffirmed its determination to “take resolute measures to firmly defend national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.”
