Taiwan Lawmakers Begin Impeachment Against President Lai
The proposal was adopted with the backing of 60 opposition legislators from the Kuomintang and the Taiwan People’s Party, while 51 representatives from the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) voted against it.
Lai, who won election and assumed office last year, could be asked to justify his conduct before legislators after the conclusion of preliminary hearings. The impeachment process is projected to move forward until at least May of next year, when a final vote on impeachment is planned.
The initiative came after Lai declined on Dec. 15 to approve revised legislation designed to raise the proportion of public revenue allocated to local administrations. This decision represented the first instance in Taiwan’s contemporary political era in which a senior elected official refused to sign a bill passed by the legislature.
In last year’s elections, Lai’s DPP surrendered its legislative majority, dealing a blow to his leadership as opposition groups strengthened their control within parliament.
